Our history
The squad before the squad
About 85 years ago—before the Livingston First Aid Squad was started—our local firemen joined together to create a community ambulance service to put their first aid training to use. This first “rescue squad” was available 24/7 and operated as a unit of the Fire Department. Unfortunately, with steadily increasing demand, it became difficult for the limited number of firemen to handle all the calls in addition to their fire department duties.
So, in January 1950, the Livingston First Aid Squad was created with not just firefighters, but other volunteers, too. Operating independently gave us the opportunity for a larger volunteer force, all focusing their training on first aid work. It also allowed us to make better arrangements for ambulance service and equipment maintenance.
Eventually, we became a member of the New Jersey State First Aid Council. The council keeps the squads informed of improvements in the equipment design, introduction of new equipment, changes in technique of first aid administration and so on. The Council even has a system that calls on other first aid squads to help us when the Livingston ambulances are all in service.
Over the years, we’ve come a long way. The Livingston First Aid Squad may have been started by firefighters trying to improve the ambulance service, but it’s grown to become a squad of dedicated volunteers from our community, for our community. Here’s to another 70 years.
Our Ambulance Fleet
Where the rubber meets the road
The Livingston First Aid Squad operates a group of Type III Ambulances. Our ambulances are equipped with the latest technology to provide the highest quality care to our patients. A large portion of donations go toward keeping our fleet both up-and-running and up-to-date.
